AFC Corsham is proud to take part in Silent Support Weekend on 15-16 March, an initiative led by England Football to create a matchday experience that puts young players at the heart of the game. This weekend, we are encouraging all spectators—parents, coaches, and supporters—to take a step back, keep vocal input to a minimum, and let our players take charge on the pitch.
What is Silent Support Weekend?
Silent Support Weekend is a national campaign designed to give young footballers more ownership, decision-making opportunities, and independence during matches. The goal is simple: to create an environment where players think for themselves, communicate with their teammates, and enjoy the game without external pressure.
How does it work?
• Support through applause only – No shouting instructions or coaching from the sidelines.
• Players make their own decisions – No interference from adults during play.
• Coaches provide only minimal direction – This encourages player-led problem-solving and teamwork.
• Referees officiate without external pressure – Creating a more respectful atmosphere.
Why is this important?
Research shows that too much instruction from the sidelines can negatively impact a child’s confidence and ability to think independently on the field. Silent Support Weekend promotes a more player-focused approach, helping them:
• Develop communication and leadership skills.
• Take responsibility for their own game.
• Build confidence and decision-making ability.
• Improve their enjoyment and love for football.
How Can Parents and Spectators Help?
We ask all parents and supporters to:
• Applaud good play from both teams.
• Encourage from the sidelines with gestures (e.g., thumbs up).
• Let the coaches and referees do their job.
• Avoid shouting instructions or giving tactical advice.
Coaches: Supporting Players on Silent Support Weekend
For our coaches, this is a great opportunity to step back and observe how players handle the game on their own. Some key coaching strategies for the weekend include:
• Let them play – Allow players to make their own decisions on the pitch.
• Let them lead – Encourage them to communicate and work together.
• Let them learn – Observe how they respond to challenges and discuss improvements after the match.
Join Us in Creating a Positive Matchday Experience!
Silent Support Weekend is a fantastic opportunity to see the game through our young players’ eyes. Let’s embrace the challenge, support them with applause, and allow their voices to be the loudest on the pitch.
We look forward to seeing all AFC Corsham teams in action and creating an atmosphere where our players can truly thrive.
